Nigerian music encompasses a variety of folk and mainstream genres. Prior to European contact, little of the country’s music history has been preserved, though bronze carvings of performers and their instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries have been discovered.
The country’s internationally recognized genres include Indigenous, Apala, Aurrebbe, Rara, Were, Ogene, Fuji, Jùjú, Afrobeat, Afrobeats, Igbo highlife, Afro-juju, Waka, Igbo rap, Gospel, and Yo-pop.
